If you must administer medicine, like insulin, to your pet by injection, will you be able to do it? Here's how it's done so you can be ready.
1
Get someone to help the first time, if at all possible. Your helper can help distract or gently restrain your pet.
2
Draw medication into a clean syringe with needle. Hold it up with needle pointing up and gently push up the stopper and tap the syringe to remove air bubbles.
3
Pinch and pull up on loose skin at the back of the neck or between the shoulder blades. You should be able to easily pull up skin into a little tent or upside-down V.
4
With your helper holding the pet's head or distracting it, gently but firmly push the needle into the inside of the V of skin. Make sure your helper doesn't get in the way of teeth or claws and that the needle goes into and under the skin and not through it.
5
Slowly and steadily push in the syringe plunger.
6
That's it. Remove the needle and cap it. Toss it in an appropriate container. It's not necessary to clean the spot with alcohol before or treat it after unless your pet is excessively dirty.
