Teach your puppy to sit with these basic steps your puppy can interpret.

When the pup isn't too excited, get his attention, push his rump down into the sit position and say "sit" in a firm. low voice - not loud.

For a pup who collapses or tries to play when you push him into position, you might try catching him sitting and say "sit" and then praise the dog so he can begin to associate the word with the position. Also, taking him by the collar and gently pulling back while you push down his rump could help.

Keep working regularly with the puppy and praise and give a small treat when he sits even briefly. Don't allow him to squat though.

Repeat, repeat, repeat. Young puppies can take awhile to get it, but with repetition and praise they will catch on.
