A checklist of things to remember and watch to keep your pet healthy and safe during the holidays.
1
Don't feed your dog lots of rich, fatty or sweet treats just because it's the holidays. These treats can cause as many or more health problems for your pet than they do for you. Dogs should not eat fruit, particularly grapes or raisins. Rich or spicy foods can trigger painful and sometimes fatal pancreatitis.
2
Watch the chocolate! Chocolate can be toxic to dogs. Dark chocolate can be more toxic. Even if it's wrapped, a curious dog and his keen sense of smell can find it and chew into it before you know it.
3
Keep the dangerous plants away. Many holiday plants are toxic, like poinsettas, and should be kept away from pets - pets kept out of the room where they are.
4
Keep pet safe from dangerous decorations. Sparkly tinsel and other decorations can look like a fascinating toy to kitty and pup, but can cause choking, intestinal blockage or damage, or other injuries. Cords should be kept safe from chewing.
5
Put the candles well out of your pets' reach. Housefires have been caused when a curious kitty knocked over a candle.
6
Be sure to keep your pets safe from guests (who might feed them no-no's) and keep your guests safe from your pets (who might get nervous or excited and misbehave).
7
Don't neglect your pet during the rush and hubbub. If you will be leaving town, make your boarding or pet sitting reservation well in advance. Remember to keep them feed and watered as you usually would.
