How To Walk Your Cat

Some cats CAN be trained to walk on a leash. They won't stroll down the block with you like your dog will, but they can be taken out on a leash if necessary. It can also be a good way to control your cat when you travel or take it to the Vet.

Buy a harness that will snuggly fit your cat. NEVER use a collar and leash on a cat. Cats can pull out of collars or injure themselves.

Put the harness on the cat to see how well it tolerates it. Make sure the harness is snug under the front legs so it won't slip off, but don't pinch or choke the cat.

Let your cat get used to wearing the harness.

Attach the leash and walk WITH the cat at first - preferably indoors so if the cat becomes frightened the situation can be better controlled. Don't try to pull or lead your cat.

Pet and soothe your cat when she tolerates the leash and walks around with you. Let the cat lead and don't force it to walk.

With your cat wearing the harness and leash, try an exercise in which you hold the end of the leash, walk to the end of it, and try to call and coax your cat to come to you. Give kitty a treat from your hand when she comes. If she walks with you immediately and doesn't allow you to move away - good! - you are on the right track.

Practice walking around with your cat regularly.
