How to House Train a Puppy

The best way to train your indoor dog not to "go" in the house.
1
Establish a sleeping room or area for your dog and get a cage or pet carrier that is large enough for the dog to stand up and turn around in.
2
Until the dog is trained, it must stay in the crate unless you are feeding/watering or exercising the dog outside. It is best for the cage or carrier to always be kept in the same location.
If you need to let the dog out, it must be very closely supervised and taken outside if it shows any signs of necessity.
3
Feed the dog at the same time or times each day.
4
Take the dog to walk or let it outside after it eats. It is preferable to supervise and praise the dog when it goes "potty". Use a consistent word and praise using this word.
For example: "Good potty, Buster! Good potty!"
5
After the dog has had sufficient time to "potty", bring it back inside and place back into its den (the crate or carrier).
A dog instinctively wants to keep its den, or sleeping area, clean of waste.
6
If the dog has an accident in its den, the mess should be cleaned up as soon as possible and cleaned thoroughly to eliminate odor - both for the dog's sake as well as yours!
7
If you stick to these practices the dog will learn to go outside and not in your house. Keep in mind a very young puppy may not have much control and make take longer to train.
Once the dog is consistently going outside, you may allow it to gradually expand its territory inside the house.
