A ghost story doesn't even have to be all that good if the atmosphere and mood during the telling of it is excellent.
1
Tell the ghost story at night, when it’s really dark.
2
Put a small little candle that barely has a flame between the listeners.
3
Play soft classical music or tell the story very late at night when everything is eerily quiet.
4
Tell the story outdoors on the grass or at the beach, under a moonlit sky or one that is partly cloudy with the moon disappearing behind the clouds from time to time.
5
Wear the hood of your top, or drape a sheet or towel over most of your head.
6
Hold a torch up to your face under your chin and speak slowly and seriously, but whisper.
7
Look over your shoulder from time to time as if checking if someone is lurking in the dark.
8
Cackle, or laugh wickedly at certain spots of the story.
9
Have an object in your pocket that is appropriate to the story, to pull out as you end the tale, like a screwdriver, knife or hook.
10
End your story on a loud note; shouting out the last line, so hopefully at least someone will jump out of his or her skin.
