Writing an essay does not have to be difficult. When writing an essay, you need a plan, resources, and adequate time. Writing is a process that requires steps to accomplish your goals. It is a step by step process to make you a great writer. These writing process steps can be applied to any type of creative writing.

STEP 1: PREWRITING
THINK
• Decide on a topic to write about.
• Consider who will read or listen to your written work.
• Brainstorm ideas about the subject.
• List places where you can research information.
• Do your research.

STEP 2: OUTLINE
PLANNING AND STRUCTURE
• Be sure that the supporting ideas relate to each other.
• Distinguish between ideas that are of equal importance and the ones that are of lesser importance.
• Use Roman numerals to identify main points that develop the thesis statement.
• Place the introduction and thesis statement at the beginning, under Roman numeral I.
• Use Capital letters to divide your main points into parts.
• Use Arabic numerals to subdivide any A’s, B’s, or C’s into smaller parts.
• End with the final Roman numeral to express your idea for your conclusion.

• Read what you have written again.
• Think about what others said about it.
• Rearrange words or sentences.
• Take out or add parts.
• Replace overused or unclear words.
• Read your writing aloud to be sure it flows smoothly.

• Correct spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.
• Change words that are not used correctly.
• Have someone check your work.
• Recopy it correctly and neatly.
