How To Remove The CONFICKER.C Worm

Conficker.C worm has to be removed immediately. Otherwise it might harm the affected node and also spread the worm to other systems across networks. The method explained here can be followed by everyone, whether or not you have a licensed Antivirus!

Download the Conficker.C Removal tool from http://www.symantec.com/content/en/us/global/removal_tool/threat_writeups/FixDwndp.exe. Don’t worry. It is a link from the Symantec website and doesn’t contain further viruses! It is being given as a complementary edition and is exclusively used to remove Conficker.C worm

Save the file to a preferred location

Burn the file onto a CD. This is to make sure that the virus doesn’t spread(if it exists in your system)

Disable the network connections (if you are connected in a network) and also internet connections to make sure you will not get affected during the removal to make sure the worm doesn’t spread across the network.

Turn off System Restore. For this, Right click on My Computer, Select Properties

Click on System Restore tab

Check on “Turn off System Restore on all drives”.

Double Click the binary file named FixDwndp.exe which was just burned to the CD

Click the I Accept button after reading the agreement

Click on Start button

All registry files and drives are checked for the worm

Once finished, the tool will display the number of deleted and repaired files and the number of fixed registry entries

A log file named FixDwndp.txt is created in the Desktop giving details about the scan

Reboot your computer

Make sure that there are no more Conficker.C worms in your system. Scan once more to make sure there are no more worms

Once you have done that, you may turn System Restore back on by repeating the procedure from Step 5 to 7.

Please bear in mind that this procedure will remove only Conficker.C worms in your system and not the other viruses. You need to use a LICENSED VERSION of an antivirus or other manual methods to remove other viruses.
