Your resume is your basic business asset in the employment market. The quality of your resume actually does define your likely performance in the job market at any given time. It makes the difference between getting a job and not getting a job.
For the career minded, the resume is also a combination of track record and major promotional asset. To get where you want to go, you need a good resume and good quality information on that resume.
Best practice when writing resumes is to focus on targeting specific jobs and ensuring that your resume is a very good fit with job requirements. That said – The value of the information on your resume is the other primary issue. All the information on your resume should be useful, relevant, and above all, show the employer the skills, knowledge, and experience required for the job.

Step-by-step resume writing

We’re going to provide you with a 10 step resume writing program. The idea is to give you a clear overview of the process of writing a resume and an easy guide to creating your resume.
1
Step 1 – Putting together your resume information
The first stage of writing a resume is to make sure that you have all the information you require. You will require dates of employment, workplace addresses, formal names of qualifications, and similar basic information. For some jobs you may need to cite Social Security numbers, licences, or professional certifications, so make sure these citations are accurate.
2
Step 2 – Deciding on your resume format
Depending on the type of job and in many cases your line of work or career, some resume formats are better than others. For most people, a functional resume, which is a very easy to manage, straightforward resume format is quite sufficient. For other people, particularly academics and professionals, more complex resumes are required, like combination resume formats. Choose your resume format to suit the information requirements of the jobs for which you apply.

Step 3 – Creating your basic resume
Please note that your resume will need to be modified for each job application. A One Size Fits All resume simply will not be competitive. All jobs are different, and you need to adapt your resume for every application. Your basic resume, therefore, is essentially a template. It is not your actual job application resume.
To create your basic resume, enter your core information:
Name and contact details
Personal statement/personal profile
Skills
Education/qualification/licenses/certifications
Employment history/achievements
Interests
(This is a basic functional resume format. Combination resumes may include additional information.)

Step 4 – Targeting your resume
You will need to adapt your basic resume to the requirements of each job. The primary role of the basic resume is to act as a working model for your job applications. It also serves another very useful purpose as a “shopping list” regarding job essentials.
Cross-reference your basic resume against the requirements of a particular job, and see how good a match your basic resume is for that job. This is called “targeting” a resume.
OK - What you need to add? What you need to remove? You can see what is required.

Step 5 – Adding value to your resume
The next stage is to systematically manage your information to make your application competitive. What information can you add in the different sections of the resume to show that you are a high value applicant? Can you show great sales figures, high productivity, or excellent managerial skills? Work through the job essential requirements systematically, adding competitive information.

Step 6 – Adding graphics and presentation values
Presentation isn’t just a gimmick. It’s a necessity. Good presentation makes your resume stand out, quite literally. If you’ve seen some of the latest resume formats, and compared those formats to be very boring very bland very forgettable old-style resumes, you can see why looking good is a good idea. Consider your options for graphic presentations, professional color schematics, and other visual assets.

Step 7 – Managing space
Is you’ve been putting together your resume, you will have naturally bumped into a very common problem – Managing your document space. Steps 4,5 and 6 can blow out space quite easily. This is the main reason for using a combination of graphics, bullet points, and other presentation devices. Your resume can be tailored to manage space using “magazine layout” software, including text boxes, sidebars, and other devices. Check online to see examples of this type of formatting and space management.

Step 8 – Editing and rewriting
Inevitably, you will need to edit and in most cases re-evaluate at least some of your first draft. You also need to do a quality check on typos, space management, and other fundamental issues. Take the time to go through your resume line by line, and be critical. Does something really look good? Does it make requirements of the job? Can you do better?
9
Step 9 - Polishing and improving your resume
This and next to last step is highly important. You need to focus on delivering high quality, competitive information. At this stage, you evaluate the contents of your resume, locate, and try to improve any weak points or areas.
10
Step 10 – Exercising your judgement
Appropriately enough, the last step is up to you – Is your application good enough? Do you have confidence in your application? Does your resume do you justice, or does it let you down? When you have confidence in your application, and when you believe that your application is competitive, it’s ready to submit.
